Ben Jeffreys' Experience Ben has played an active part in helping formulate Conservative policy on education. He was appointed by David Cameron to the Education Policy Group, part of the Party’s initiative to develop policies for the public services. He is also a member of the Conservative History Practitioners Advisory Group. David Cameron comments on Ben: "Ben Jeffreys, our Parliamentary Candidate in Cheadle, has got young kids to join a local Rugby Club, teaching them the importance of discipline and teamwork. Speech to the Conservative’s North West Conference in Bolton, Friday, February 22 2008 |
Ben Jeffreys was born in Yorkshire, educated in Gloucester and from a tender age has always wanted to be a Conservative MP. When he was just 12, he insisted on staying up to watch the results of the 1987 General Election. His mother is a nurse and his father, a former teacher, is a Conservative cabinet member of Stroud Council. Ben believes it was this public service background in his family that confirmed his interest in politics and led him into teaching. He graduated from St Andrews University with an MA Honours in history and international relations and then obtained a Post Graduate Certificate of Education at Cambridge. He has taught history and drama in schools in Surrey, London and Warwickshire. Today Ben lives in Bramhall, in his constituency, is a supply teacher and coaches young players for Manchester Rugby Club. Ben says that Cheadle should never have been lost to the Liberal Democrats. “Living in the constituency is helping me to understand a whole range of problems that need to be addressed”, he said. “Traffic congestion is getting worse, but the proposed congestion charge was not the answer. Schools that I have visited, such as Cheadle Hulme High School, and Kingsway, do a fabulous job but need more investment and less bureaucracy. And with the Government closing maternity and AE units, Stepping Hill Hospital needs our community’s support. I am also increasingly worried by local strategies for affordable housing.”
