Video Technical Information
Filming & Editing
All video has been recorded using professional grade HD (High definition, 1080i) Sony cameras and
edited
using Adobe software. Although recorded (& archived) in HD, all editing has been done
in SD DV (Standard Definition, Digital Video) format (as used by PAL televisions & DVD’s).
Video Transmission Format
All videos are delivered as Progressive Download, Adobe Flash movies. Progressive Download allows
the video to start playing almost immediately, whilst the file continues to download to your computer.
Previous Web
based video required the whole file to download before play could start.
Where alternate sizes are given, the
larger video is in the latest .f4v (MPEG -4) file format,
compressed to a VBR (variable bit rate)
mean of 750 kbps (1,000 kbps max).
The smaller videos use the original .flv file format, at 300 kbps (360 kbps max).
Video Play Dimensions
Standard Definition video is 1024 x 576 (square) pixels (= 720 x 576 anamorphic).
The largest videos currently on this site are ¾ size, 768 x 432 pixels.
Smaller (.flv) videos are ½ size, 512 x 288 pixels or 7/16 size, 448 x 252 pixels.
Note it is always better practice when reducing raster/bit-mapped images to reduce to a clean linear size ratio,
eg ¾, rather than to a clean number of pixels, eg 500 pixels.
Browser & Flash Player Requirements
Note that in general Microsoft Internet Explorer as a browser is less compliant
with
Web standards (HTML & CSS) than most of its competitors.
You may see better performance by upgrading to an alternate browser, eg Safari, Mozilla or Chrome.
The .flv files only require Flash player 8 or above. Whereas .f4v requires Flash 9.0 r115 and above.
